Granddad who dropped toddler from cruise ship window faces 3 years jail – Live News 24

A GRANDFATHER charged with negligent homicide over the death of his infant granddaughter faces three years in jail if convicted  Sam Anello was arrested last month over the death of 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand, who fell from the 11th-floor window of a cruise ship docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico in July  Authorities in Puerto Rico allege that Anello negligently exposed his granddaughter to danger while taking care of her  His lawyers say the death was a horrible accident, but not a crime.  Chloe’s parents, Alan and Kimberly Schulz Wiegand, have remained supportive of Anello and instead place the blame on the Royal Caribbean cruise line, who they say had failed to properly secure the glass pane  After a court appearance on Wednesday, Anello told NBC News: “They can’t do anything worse to me than has already happened ”  A date for the beginning on Anello’s trial is scheduled to be decided at a pre-trial conference on December 17  Little Chloe fell 150ft from after being lifted onto a railing near a children’s play area by her grandad  The toddler and her family had travelled from South Bend, Indiana to Puerto Rico for the cruise around the Caribbean  The incident is reported to have been captured in unreleased footage from a security camera, and Anello’s lawyer says the film supports Anello’s claim that he believed the window was closed before Chloe fell  “What I saw with the video, it’s pretty consistent with what my client has told me,” José Pérez Ortiz told the Indianapolis Star  “My client thought that the window was closed.  “Nothing in the video is inconsistent ”  Describing the reaction of Chloe’s family, a fellow passenger told Telemundo PR: “A cry of pain of that nature does not compare with any other cry ”  Anello is reported to have been so distraught in the aftermath of the accident that he had to be sedated by medics  In an interview with NBC’s TODAY show shortly after the accident, the Wiegand’s said of Anello: “He was extremely hysterical  “The thing that he has repeatedly told us is, ‘I believed that there was glass.’  “He will cry over and over and over  “At no point ever, ever has Sam ever put our kids in danger. [He’s] very, very distraught  “You can barely look at him without him crying. She was his best friend.”
